Duisburg North Country Park - Meiderich Ironworks

Probably the best-known sight in Duisburg is the disused Meiderich iron and steelworks. The landscape park, which covers approx. 180 hectares, was one of the largest sites for iron and steel production until 4 April 1985. Due to overproduction on the European steel market at the time, the industrial plant was shut down. It is interesting to know that 37 million tonnes of special pig iron were produced on the site between 1901 and 1985. Most of it was processed into steel in the works of the still existing company Thyssenkrupp.

Today the park is a place of fun, enjoyment and also a popular event location in Duisburg. Many guided tours are now offered and the blast furnace, 70 metres high, can also be climbed. Besides that, there is much more to experience, for example there is a climbing garden and also a huge indoor diving water. Thanks to recultivation, the park has a plant diversity of a good 700 different species and has already been named one of the 10 most beautiful big-city oases in the world.

Inner harbour in Duisburg

It is still considered the largest inland harbour in Europe and covers an area of approx. 89 hectares. Like Düsseldorf and Hamburg, Duisburg has a harbour in the middle of the city. Today it is more popular as a place of interest, but it was an important transhipment point for logistics. Because of the great industrial density in Duisburg, the port used to be very important. Supplies for the steel companies were delivered to the harbour and sent directly to the individual companies via the specially built railway connection. Due to changes in the economy, however, this is no longer needed nowadays. Today the image is adorned by a mixture of restaurants, bars, residential and work buildings.
